With school,
homework, rehearsals
and other
responsibilities, it
isn’t easy for student-musicians
such as Arielle B.Cady of Lancaster
to put in the
necessary but
demanding time of
practicing at home
as well. “I have a
really busy
schedule, but I try
to get in an hour a
day,” said the
18-year-old of her
violin practice.
‘Once you get into
the music, you don’t
really think about
time,” she added.
Catie L. Canale, 17,
of Rutland, plays
the harp, an
instrument with
physical as well as
mental demands- “At
least an hour a
day,” she said of
practicing at home.
“It’s definitely a
lot of endurance
building up muscles.
You’ve got to have
the desire to do
this everyday.”

“It varies for
me every day,”
said 14-year-old
violinist Ryan
K. Burns of
Worcester.
“Thirty minutes,
20 minutes, 10
minutes. In the
summer, two
hours. Once
again, you
forget about
everything and
you end up so
much happier”
There is the
discipline that
playing music
well requires,
and then there
are the rewards
— tangible and
intangible.
Arielle, Catie
and Ryan have
experienced
those twin
companions both
individually and
as members of
the Worcester
Youth Orchestras
of the
Performing Arts
School of
Worcester.
The orchestras
are going to be
rewarded with
some recognition
over the next
few
days—something
that their
Artistic
Director Cynthia
Woods feels is
overdue. First,
they’ve been
invited to
perform at the
Massachusetts
Statehouse in
Boston at 11 a.m.
Wednesday. Than
at 4 p.m. June
17, the orchestras will
stage the same
concert at
Mechanics Hall,
321 Main St.,
Worcester —
another
prestigious
setting.
I
think it's
great. First of
all, for the
kids. They 've
been working so
hard for so long
without as much
recognition as
they should
have. The
Statehouse- they
just took so
much pride in
that invitation"
Woods said. |
